Empowering Ownership, Part 2

Dear Uncommon Leaders,

How was your weekend? I hope it was great and you're ready to spring forward into a new week! 🕑➡️

Last week, we talked about empowering someone on your team to take ownership of an important task. This week, we will dive into how to choose the right person to take that ownership which will drive results in your organization. Challenge your team this week! 👏📈

Go be uncommon!

This Week's Question:

What makes a good “owner” of an important business function or responsibility?

This Week's Challenge:

In any organization, the difference between success and stagnation often comes down to ownership. When someone takes full responsibility for a business function, they don’t just complete tasks—they drive results. But what makes someone a great owner of a responsibility rather than just a participant? Three key traits stand out: initiative, accountability, and a solutions-oriented mindset. Identifying these qualities in your team can help you delegate responsibilities with confidence.

First, true owners show initiative. They don’t wait for direction—they proactively seek opportunities to improve their area of responsibility. They anticipate challenges, propose solutions, and take action without needing constant oversight.

Second, they demonstrate accountability. They own not only the wins but also the setbacks, refusing to shift blame or make excuses. Instead, they analyze what went wrong, make adjustments, and keep moving forward.

Lastly, they possess a solutions-oriented mindset. Rather than focusing on obstacles, they approach problems with a problem-solving attitude, always looking for ways to overcome challenges and improve performance.

Your challenge this week is to take a closer look at your team. Who consistently takes initiative without being asked? Who owns their results—good or bad—without excuses? Who approaches challenges with a problem-solving mindset rather than a list of complaints? These individuals are your potential "owners." Identify one person who demonstrates these traits.

This Week's Quote to Ponder:

"Leaders take ownership. When others make excuses, they make progress." - Robin Sharma
