If you have ever been to one of Todd Duncan’s events, like Mastery, then you know some pretty amazing things can happen there. Several years ago I was there in Palm Desert, and found myself alone in the room with bestselling author Andy Andrews. At that time I was in the process of writing Every Day is Game Day.
I thought to myself, “This is a perfect opportunity to learn ‘the secret.’” Andy was very approachable, and I seized the moment. “Andy, what is the secret to being a successful writer?”
It was almost as though he had anticipated my question. He looked at me intently and said, “Just write.”
He said that if I had a book inside of me, I had already been inspired enough. I just needed to write.
I wanted to say, “Come on Andy, obviously I know I need to write… but what is the secret?” He must know something I didn’t know – he was already a very successful writer. His answer just wasn’t the answer I had anticipated.
I took his advice, and I just wrote. I wrote until I finished the book. Just as Andy had said, it was hard work, but the kind of work that pays off in huge dividends.
The other day, I walked into a coffee shop and saw a lady curled up on a coach in the sitting area reading Every Day is Game Day. I can’t explain the feeling I had when I saw her.
In September, Bruce Tollner and I will release The CHILD Game Plan. Andy’s advice paid off again. My third book is already in the editing process.
Most of us dream of some larger goal we would like to accomplish. Andy’s advice holds true, no matter what your dream. Do you want to be a musician? Then play. Do you want to be the top salesperson in your company? Then make those calls. Do you want to be a great parent? Then spend time with your kids.
If you want to write a book, you can’t sit down and write a book. You write a word, which turns into a sentence. Sentences become paragraphs, which turn into pages, and pretty soon you have a chapter. Keep at it long enough, and your chapters become a book.
Do you want to be successful? Just do the work. Practice the small disciplines every day, and the results will accumulate.
Thank you Andy!
Do you have a dream inside of you? Are you practicing the daily disciplines that will get you there?
