Beginning today, each week I will post a quote with a question. The intent is that you ponder the quote, and then answer the question by commenting on the post. By sharing your thoughts with others, you have the opportunity to help them think even deeper about the quote in a way they may not have considered otherwise.
Let’s begin.
Discipline is the bridge between thought and accomplishment, between inspiration and achievement, between necessity and productivity. – Jim Rohn
Ponder the quote…
If discipline is so powerful in helping us accomplish more, achieve more, and become more productive, then why aren’t we all more disciplined? How can one become more disciplined?
I believe we’d all be more disciplined if we had an accountability partner or coach. It’s much easier to give ourselves a pass rather than having to answer to somebody else.
But we should all strive for self-discipline.
“Self-discipline is when your conscious tells you to do something and you don’t talk back.” W.K. Hope
That is a great question Tim. Most loan officers understand that if you take the time to do a complete and quality application collecting the appropriate documents upfront the process is easier but many allow the customer or cirmustances cause them to short cut saving time but the result costs them more time during the process.
Iphone, Blackberry, Twitter, Email all designed to make life easier but speeding up our ability to communicate and obtain information but in reality has created organized chaos that each individual can harness only if they use it as intended and the follow their plan without exception.
I totally agree Jorge C.
It it so easy to give myself a pass… I’m glad I have a coach.
I also love the quote you included.
Thanks for your response!
No doubt Todd! Discipline can make everything easier.
You nailed it with all of those things designed to make life easier but the lack of discipline in putting those things to use can create organized chaos.
Thanks for your response!
We are disciplined, Tim; normally by other people: a boss, a mate, our kids, even our Grandkids, a job, a career, whatever drives us to get up in the morning, go to a job, and sell our lives or more specifically our precious time at wholesale to someone who, in turn, sells it at retail and becomes successful. They drive the big cars; they put the fur coats on THEIR wives that we paid for with our lives.
What you are actually referrimg to is “self-discipline” an all together different animal. A few years ago, a really good and wise friend told me, you WILL be disciplined in your life! What you have to chose is whether you discipline yourself and become successful beyond your wildest dreams or you will allow others to discipline you and just survive. It is easier for most people to chose the latter and rationalize, “Oh, I have a good job!” A “Good Job” is an oxymoron like jumbo shrimp or honest politician (oh, I digress). When the fear of failure (which can be defined as “survival” in this context) or your excitement for your own success becomes so great, then and only then will you become self-disciplined. Most people, daily, break the 13th Commandment, “Thou shalt not fool thyself!” They look around them and say, “Oh, I’m not doing too bad!” or “I’m doing as good (or better) than the people I hang around with”. Problem is, you’re hanging around the wrong people! We really are like the proverbial Ostrich, sticking our heads in the sands until, all of a sudden it’s too late: Our company is sold, our career is leap frogged by the bosses son, a trusted friend betrays us, our company’s product is antiquated, etc, etc. We stood by while the sands of time in our lives flowed and we passed up opportunities because we were not willing to step out and discipline ourselves.
As far as how we can become more (self) disciplined: Get a big enough dream it takes your breath away. Find something that only you and God can accomplish. Focus on it, dream about it, pray about it, and more importantly, just “Go For it!” You can sit in the fastest car on the planet, but if all you do is race the motor and never put it in gear it’s just a pretty piece of junk.
I think one of the most difficult and disturbing things about going to heaven is finding out what we really could have accomplish with our lives. No one is even close to their potential!!!!!
Wow Larry! This part is so good, I just had to copy and paste it again here… and to Facebook. Everybody needs to read these words at least twice (every day)!
