There are certain things in life we can control, and certain things we can’t. I can’t control traffic and I can’t control the weather. But I can control how I adjust to each.

I can take a different route or leave earlier to avoid traffic. I can dress appropriately or adapt my plans for various weather conditions.

At times it may feel like there is so much out of your control that all you are doing is adapting. But just think about how much you actually DO have control over every day:

  • The words you say…
  • The food you eat…
  • What time you go to bed…
  • What you watch on TV…
  • What you listen to…

We make so many choices every day and, for better or for worse, one choice can directly affect others.

I usually try to take early morning flights when I fly. I do this because, in most cases, the plane I am about to board is already at the airport. The longer you wait in the day to fly, the greater the chance that some weather or mechanical issue at some other airport could impact your travel. I reduce the odds of that happening by taking early flights.

Take a moment to think about the choices you make every day. Is there an area of your life in which you are constantly forced to adapt to unfriendly circumstances beyond your control?

Now, can you trace it back to something you CAN control?
