listwritingIf you desire progress, there is always work to be done. We all know that. Sometimes it feels overwhelming even to look at my to do list. I have found two questions that help me focus on what really needs to be done.

Question 1

What needs calibrating in my organization or life?

Calibrating is about making minor adjustments or fine-tuning something. We might calibrate a system or process just to improve it a bit. A website always needs calibrating; an adjustment here, an addition there – just to keep it fresh and up to date. We should always be looking to make calibrations in our pursuit of excellence.

Question 2

What needs renovating in my organization or life?

Renovating is a lot more intense. Sometimes we need to completely tear something apart and re-build it. This is more time consuming, usually more expensive and it requires additional planning and input. An example might be overhauling an HR process or upgrading to new technology. If something becomes seriously out dated it likely will need renovation.

Much like home repair, if we wait too long to renovate, the cost and difficulty rise, so it’s best to keep a prioritized list and to budget time and money for renovating.

What needs calibrating and what needs renovating in your organization or your life? I have my list and it looks like I’ll be busy for a while.

Let’s get back to work!
